NAFO Annual Meeting

The Torngat Secretariat Fisheries Research Program Manager is attending the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Annual Meeting in Halifax this week. The Annual Meeting brings together 12 contracting parties (Canada, Cuba, Denmark, European Union, France, Iceland, Japan, Republic of Korea, Norway, Russian Federation, Ukraine, and the United States of America) to discuss international science and management of fisheries in the NAFO Convention Area (See Figure). The Annual Meeting brings together the NAFO General Council, Scientific Council, and Fisheries Commission to discuss the issues surrounding eleven species, eight of which are listed in Schedule C of the Labrador Inuit Settlement Agreement. The Torngat Secretariat is focused this week on Greenland halibut (turbot), this species is fished by Nunatsiavut designates in Northern Labrador.
