The first aerial census of the Torngat Mountains caribou herd is planned for this month. This is a collaborative effort between the Torngat Secretariat, the Nunatsiavut Government, Makivik Corporation, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Government of Quebec, Parks Canada and Nunavik Parks.

The design was led by caribou biologist, Serge Couturier, P.h.D. and was guided by representatives of the above-noted governments and organizations. The project is majority funded by the federal Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, with contributions from all governments and organizations. The field team has a member appointed by the Nunatsiavut Government and a member appointed by Makivik Corporation.

The logistics of coordinating an inaugural census of this magnitude have been challenging, and the cooperation of all parties has been critical to the success of the planning thus far.
