On December 19th, 2011, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced measures for the 2011-2012 George River Caribou hunting season.

As implemented in 2010-11, the commercial caribou hunt, non-resident caribou hunting via the use of outfitters, and the resident caribou licence transfer system for Labrador residents remains suspended. Each resident licence is limited to one caribou only.

Changes for 2011-2012:

1) The season opened on December 20th, 2011 and will close on March 20th, 2012;

2) Licence sales will be restricted to Provincial Government offices only; The sale of licences by Provincial Government offices will allow for more efficient monitoring of sales;

3) The fee of a Labrador caribou general licence is reduced from $27 to $13.50 (plus applicable taxes) to reflect the change in the bag limit which has been reduced from two to one caribou;

4) A herd health monitoring program will be implemented, requesting all harvesters to collect biological samples from each caribou taken.
